Good for BBQs, bad for apples

Get some cider in for the long weekend
Greetings, Ciderling!
Locals! You can still get cider delivered in time for the bank holiday weekend. And wherever you’re based, if you sign up to our subscription there’s a Brucie Bonus in it for you. More on that in a mo.
If you’ve got apples for us... hold your horses! Our annual apple appeal runs from September 1st until October 19th. The deal is we give you a bottle of cider per bag of apples you donate to the cider cause. Win win! Drop them with us at the farm from next month onwards please.
We're hoping for one last sunny day on 12th September when we hold our next cidery tour and tap night at our Framfield cidery.
If you haven’t been to a tap night before, you’ve only a couple more chances left this year.
🍎 Orchard picking days
Get some fresh air! Bring your friends and family to a beautiful Sussex orchard and help us bring in the harvest. We'll pick and collect apples to turn into cider, which otherwise would go to waste. Next month, we’re gathering on 17th September near North Chailey and on 21st September near High Hurstwood. Full info (and other dates) right here.
☀️ Not another one…
All this multiple heatwave malarkey can cause havoc with the apples. Did you know, apples can get sunburnt just like us? You can even get special apple suncream to protect the precious fruits. Can’t say we go to that extreme though. So you won't find us out in the orchard lovingly rubbing lotion into every apple.
The leaves get a bit frazzled (same, leaves…same), reducing the available surface area for successful photosynthesis. If you remember GCSE/O-Level (delete based on how crumbly you are) biology, you’ll know that’s how trees turn sunlight into energy.
The heat can also make the fruit ripen too quickly, before it’s had time to grow all plump and juicy. Less juicy = less juice. Bad news for us cidermakers! That said, the higher sugar content caused by hot summers means a higher ABV%. So it’s not all doom and gloom.
Rest assured, the Bignose & Beardy orchard is looking pretty healthy. A couple of heavy downpours in July kept the trees going so fingers crossed the hot hot heat has only served to sweeten the yield. Time will tell!
In the meantime, slather yourself in (human-friendly) suncream and stay safe out there.
🎁 Get a whole year of gifts as a cider subscriber
If you sign up to our cider subscription before the end of August*, you’ll get a whole year of extra pressies. We’ll put something in with each subscription delivery so the more often you get cider delivered, the more gifts you’ll get. You also save 15% when you subscribe.
You control…
-
how much you get, how often, and for how long.
-
what kind of cider you get - dry, not so dry, a mix.
The bonus gift will vary each time. You might open your subscription box to find a little bottle of our Spirit Of Cider. Or maybe something more permanent like some Bignose and Beardy merch or memory-making event tickets. We’ll even share some of our limited edition back catalogue of cider with you. Subscribe now and look forward to that kid-on-Christmas excitement each time you open the box. Okay, we might have oversold the emotional thrills. But it'll be fun. Promise.
*you’ll still get pressies if you subscribe after the end of August, but if you sign up this month you’ll get a whole year of aforementioned unboxing joy.
Whatever you’re up to over the long bank holiday weekend, have a goodun.
Cheers!
