Description

A single batch case of 2023 Turning Japanese.

Our friend Jenni lets us pick her orchard in Horam.

The Japanese Pears almost look like apples but with a very different flavour.

We pressed these with Michelin, Dabinett and Bramley apples to create a well balanced acid led Pyder with a pleasing long finish.

Orchard Notes

Apple Appeal Donations
Each year local folk bring us their unwanted apples and swap them for cider. Tons of apples arrive at the cidery in bags and boxes ready to be washed and pressed. We rarely know what we've been given, but we know its locally grown, untreated fruit that's appreciated by the donors. Most people tell us it alleviates their guilt to bring the fruit that would otherwise have rotted on the ground and they get the added bonus of going home with bottles of finished cider!

Rocks Lane, High Hurstwood
Our friend Mick bought an orchard by mistake. Out walking his dog one day, his footpath took him across a field being used as a builders yard. On meeting the builder he discovered the field was for sale and made an offer right there. A little further down the line he learned that the mass of brambles at the bottom of the field hid an old orchard untouched for 25 years. 3000 trees were waiting to be rediscovered pruned hard and brought back to life.

We visit this orchard every year on one of our picking days. there is loads of room for families and well behaved dogs and plenty of apples for all.

Terrible Down Barn
Possibly the site of a violent battle in the dark ages, certainly named after one. It may be associated with the battle of Lewes, but that is disputed. Perhaps more likely the name commemorates a terrible viking raid in which the land was stained red with the blood of defenders and attackers.

It's a less terrible spot these days situated just where the low weald meets the high. Sheltered by the south downs and drenched in sunshine and rain this orchard produces a great harvest most years, far more than Nigel and Jude can get through. We harvest the rest, each tree providing a different variety in a range of colours, sixes and flavours its a delightful orchard to harvest and regularly contributes to some of our favourite batches.

Little Shepherds, Blackboys

A couple of lanes from us is this small private orchard, the hobby of the old owner. It is filled with mature trees, and some fascinating examples of grafting experiments with several trees bearing multiple varieties. When first invited to harvest fruit the orchard was overgrown and hard to access, now its looking in great shape and is home to a wide variety of animals and plants, including pesky deer who chew the young leaves and buds as high as they can reach.

Delivery Information

We ship orders on Tuesdays and Thursdays but please allow up to seven days for delivery once you have ordered. This is because we only work on the Bignose & Beardy part time as we have other jobs the rest of the week. Often we can get an order out quicker, but we can't guarantee it.

Deliveries must be signed for by a person aged 18 or over. Drivers operate a challenge 25 policy: if you appear under 25 you will be asked for photo ID.

If you live really nearby to us (within 3 miles) we'll deliver to you for free on orders of £20 or more. Just place your order and if your postcode qualifies, free shipping will automatically be added to your order. If you end up paying for shipping by accident we'll refund the shipping and still deliver for free. What's not to love?!

(NB if you are browsing in ‘private’ mode the free shipping automatic selection does not work)

Local customers, select the pick up option on check out to avoid paying delivery charges on this order. You can collect from the Cidery on Fridays or at other times by appointment.

We work with a neighbouring business to ship our goods (as they can get better prices than we can - being bigger than us). The shipping cost is based on the total weight of your order and is automatically calculated at checkout. We can ship most products (up to 20kg) for £10.00 to the UK. Some of our products are lighter and so cost less. It can make sense to add an item to your order to make the most of the shipping costs:
