Hygge and heavy lifting
Greetings, Ciderling!
How’s it going?
It’s currently the 87th of January, how are we holding up?
The orchards are still overwintering and so should you. Wrap up warm, light some candles, get your frosty fingers around a warm cup of mulled cider. It’s hygge season!
We can’t claim to know how to say it (“hyoo-guh” apparently) but we certainly FEEL hygge. It’s a Dane thing *checks dictionary* “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being”.
To us it means sitting with a good podcast, slippers on, warm by the woodburner while wind whips rain at the windows. Painfully middle class, we know. Hygge started to get “big” just after 2008. Wonder what global shenanigans might have made people embrace a simpler lifestyle 🤔
In cider news
You’d think we’d be quiet over winter. Autumn is our busiest season by far, but our to-do list over winter is surprisingly long. And pretty dull. It’s a lot of heavy lifting, sorting out the barn, stacking stuff and having a general tidy up.
We also get on with pruning the apple trees. It makes sense to do it while they’re asleep, so they don’t wriggle and scream so much. Really, it’s because the sap stops flowing which makes it easier and less of a shock to the trees. There are lots of ways to balls it up though (trust us), so we’re holding a pruning workshop on 15th February. Learn how to do it properly, with lunch included.
We’re also embarking on An Experiment. There’s always fun afoot when one of us says to the other “I’ve had an idea…”
Sometimes it gets shot down immediately. Sometimes we mull (pun intended) it over. This one was an instant “OOH YES!” We can’t reveal too much yet but let’s just say we’re adding some depth to… something.
Answers on an email. What do you think we’re up to this time?
