Wassaile the trees, that they may beare
You many a Plum and many a Peare:
For more or lesse fruits they will bring,
As you do give them Wassailing
What a great night! Over 220 people joined us for the cold and frosty return of the annual Wassailing at B&B HQ orchard. Festivities started late afternoon with games, crafts, making lanterns and noise makers, as well as cooking dough twists over the fire. This was followed by a flaming torch procession through the orchard whilst making as much noise as possible to ward off evil spirits, culminating in ceremony to bless the trees for a fruitful harvest in the coming season – all very traditional and pagan in origin. We were very fortunate to be joined by the Lewes Skull Drummery this year – the Tub Thumpers! - all finished off with soup, sausages and, of course, mulled cider!
